About Hexham Abbey
Since the monasteries were dissolved in 1537, Hexham Abbey has served as the parish church for its Northumberland town. The church is dedicated to St Andrew and listed at Grade I. Its story starts with a first building in AD 674. Most of what stands today took shape in the 12th century, and more was added close to the start of the 20th century. In 2014 the abbey took back its former monastic buildings, which had served as Hexham's magistrates' court, and turned them into a visitor centre with a permanent exhibition on its history.
