About Lacock Abbey
In the Wiltshire village of Lacock, Lacock Abbey is now a country house, made by remodelling and extending the cloister court of an abbey of nuns. Ela, Countess of Salisbury, founded that Augustinian nunnery early in the 13th century, and it lasted until 1539. Sir William Sharington then bought the property and made the convent his family's home. Fortified in the Civil War, it stayed loyal to the crown until it surrendered once Devizes fell in 1645. The house later passed to the Talbots. Henry Fox Talbot photographed one of its windows in 1835, producing what may be the oldest camera negative to survive. In 1944 Matilda Theresa Talbot handed house and village to the National Trust.
