About Launceston Castle
Launceston Castle was probably built after 1068 by Robert, Count of Mortain, first in earth and timber with a large motte in one corner of the bailey, then rebuilt in stone in the 12th century. It was the administrative centre of the earldom of Cornwall, and after 1227 Richard of Cornwall added a high tower so visitors could look out over his lands. When the earldom's administration moved to Lostwithiel the castle declined and became a gaol, criticised so heavily for its conditions that it was nicknamed Castle Terrible; by 1842 the last prisoners had moved to Bodmin. The motte, keep and high tower still stand. The castle belongs to the Duchy of Cornwall and is run by English Heritage.
