About Melrose Abbey
Melrose Abbey, properly St Mary's Abbey, dates from 1136, when King David I invited Cistercian monks to found it; until the Reformation it was the order's chief house in Scotland. It was built in the Gothic style on the plan of a St John's Cross, and much of it is now ruined, cared for by Historic Environment Scotland. Its burials include Alexander II and other Scottish kings and nobles. In 1921 a lead casket believed to hold the heart of Robert the Bruce turned up beneath the chapter house site, and it was found again in 1998. The stonework is known for its carvings of saints, dragons, gargoyles and plants. On one stairway the master mason John Morow carved "Be halde to ye hende" (keep in mind the end, your salvation), which Melrose has taken as its motto.
