About Waltham Abbey Church
Waltham Abbey Church, often just called Waltham Abbey, is the parish church of Waltham Abbey in Essex, and people have worshipped here since the 7th century. Most of today's building is Norman work of the early 12th century. After the abbey was refounded in 1177 a huge extension eastwards was begun, and traces of it remain east of the church. In the late Middle Ages it was among England's largest churches and a major place of pilgrimage, and in 1540 it became the last religious community shut in the Dissolution. Its eastern parts were then demolished, and the crossing tower and transepts, both Norman, collapsed in 1553. King Harold Godwinson, killed at Hastings in 1066, is said to lie in the churchyard.
